You can get incredible sound out of Sony’s underrated XE300 portable Bluetooth speaker if you stereo pair them and tweak the EQ.

When it launched a couple of years ago, the XE300 got OK reviews. Most reviewers noted that the speaker is rugged, sounds good and gets very loud. But at $200, it was overpriced compared to rivals. See, for example, reviews from Rtings, PCMag and SoundGuys.

But check out this geeky thread on Reddit about pairing up the speakers and tweaking their sound. The reviewer — who claims to work in the audio industry — acknowledges that the XE300 never got much love and was too expensive.

However, the Sony speaker comes with some great technology inside and can be made to sound great, especially if you tweak the EQ and pick up two of them to create a stereo pair.

“[Max] out the bass and treble sliders in the Sony app which give[s] even more headroom, and voila we have a genuinely powerful pair of speakers at our disposal,” the post says.
